AUG. 21 - SIGN UP SHEET for VOLUNTEERS
VOLUNTEERS... VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR ALL EVENTS.

Seriously Members, when we say we need extra help, we are not expecting a monthly or yearly commitment, we are merely looking for some help on specific events or fundraisers. If we all just put in a few nights a year, or a few events we would be set up for annual success. Come along with us in building #1042 and #1076 into the BEST LODGE IN VIRGINIA !

Almost all the current volunteers started out as..."I wouldn't mind pitching in to help out."...soon after they realized it was a lot of fun to meet new people, gain new skills, help others, and learn more about the Moose organization in how we help to support our two main charities, Mooseheart and Moosehaven.

For over 100 years selfless volunteers have been building, donating, sanding, giving, painting, hauling, nailing, sawing, baking, cooking, grilling, shopping, giving, digging, praying, thinking, offering, designing, managing, recruiting, and in general being a good Moose member.

Coming soon - You will see a large Sign Up Sheet hanging on one of the walls - please don't hesitate to write your name in and add your specific TALENT/SKILL such as CARPENTRY OR TILE WORK OR CARPET... or write in GENERAL HELP.

Unlike the story that goes "The guy with the most toys wins..." It should be The Lodge that has the MOST VOLUNTEERS WINS... AND WINS BIG !!

Thanks, Your Communications Officer - Chris Harney

Examples of volunteerism:
One long time member lent us his truck and trailer to transport our 2 new steam tables.
One member cleans, pulls weeds, waters, plants and so many other things.
One member tries to find things in and around the lodge to repair or replace.o
One member shops for your food, and turns around and cooks it for you on many nights.
One member sells 50/50 tickets every Wednesday... and likes it.
One member... Oops, two members run your Queen of Hearts program every Wednesday.
One member volunteers to bartend when others are out.
One member builds bars, repurposes chairs, and repairs things in and around the updated Pavilion.
One member is our Seafood Specialist on the last Friday of every month.
Many of our very special members dig deep for hours into hot dishwater scraping and cleaning.
Several of our members dedicate 3 - 4 hours in the kitchen cooking, running, cleaning, storing.
You may not know this but some of our paid bartenders, also volunteer their time serving on busy nights. They also pitch in for Lodge events like the upcoming upcoming Aug. 11 Bake Auction.

*not all volunteering are physical activities - You can work on email lists. You can make phone calls, You can use word processing at home to reinvent our food menu. You could help manage volunteers and their upcoming activities. You could make up Flyers or Signs for events.

Some members would prefer to give money because their family schedules are too busy to volunteer in person. That's great. We can put those funds towards materials, food, drinks, etc. for our upcoming events. Gift cards can be used to make up raffle baskets!

Thanks... and one last reminder... V O L U N T E E R !

Kids and Pets
The Franconia Moose Lodge will be hosting a special pet program for children, ages 5-13, on Saturday, June 11, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., entitled, “So You Think You Want a Pet?” Parents are welcome to accompany their children, and this program is open to the public. This program will run concurrently with the Moose Lodge Flea Market which is also open to the entire community.

Families often are faced with questions from their kids regarding whether or not they can handle a pet, what age is appropriate for children to have a pet, what real responsibilities are involved in pet ownership, and what the best pet for their family might be. This program will address those questions and educate the kids so that they are better equipped to participate in the family discussion. The pet program will address the basics of pet ownership for kids and their families, starting from the “I think we’re ready” stage to the “What do we do now?” phase once a pet has been selected and brought home.

Elizabeth Singleton, a member of the Women of the Moose at the Franconia Lodge, will lead the program and will be bringing one of her pets to the program for interaction after the presentation. She is a former humane educator with the Alexandria Animal Welfare League and also held the positions of advisory committee chair and member for the Fairfax County Animal Shelter.

Volunteers Needed
Our Lodge is in immediate need of volunteers to help with a variety of initiatives that support our programs and goals. Please join us in helping make our Moose the best Lodge in the District!

If any of the initiatives listed below interest you please call Governor Jody Ryals at 703-455-3057 or Junior Governor Tim Smith at 703-585-7304. If you have other ideas you would like to see implemented please let us know about them. We'll continue to list new ideas here as they become known to us.

1. Kids Night: We'd like to promote our family friendly environment by focusing on children interests. The idea is to organize evenings when we may offer promotions on meals that kids enjoy, consider indoor activities such as cornhole, darts, or pool, and movies or face painting it may encourage families to frequent our Lodge and have fun with the whole family. Please let us know if you can help!

2. Special Tutoring: Along the lines of supporting our Moose families, a proposal for holding a "tutor" night has been raised. This is imagined to be an opportunity to provide support to kids in their areas of their school curriculum. This idea may be a little complicated to get started but may be very helpful to our membership families once we do.

3. Entertainment Committee: We would like to add a volunteer or two to this standing committee. Currently, our committee is comprised of Governor Ryals and former Governor Jeff Dowdy. As we move forward, we feel there is an opportunity to increase Lodge entertainment events and enjoyment for our full membership. We also think we will hold entertainment events into our hall area rather than using the social quarters as we have in the past.

Again, don't be shy. We can use help on each of these ideas and many more. If you want to get engaged we have a place for you.

Queen of Hearts
Yesterday, the Governor met with a representative of the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, Division of Consumer Protection, Office of Charitable Gaming. Following a review of our procedures for operating our Wednesday Queen of Hearts game we were informed of areas where we have been out of compliance with State law. We've also identified certain areas where our practices have not been compliant with Moose International policy. As we work to reinstate our Queen of Heart game we want to inform the Lodge membership of changes that we must immediately implement. Many of these changes are derived from new State rules that took effect in 2010. Many of these changes and their impact on our past procedures is provided below and will be reviewed in the upcoming General membership meeting:

- Revenue collected from the game must now be deposited in a discrete business checking account and not co-mingled with other Lodge funds. This change will require approval from Moose International to open a new bank account.

- The seed money used to start each new game is limited to the value of ticket sales on the last day of the previous game. In our current circumstance, we had planned on beginning our new game with about $8500.00 that was collected in our last game. In accordance with State law, we will be strictly limited in the amount we can start with. Our administrative staff is coordinating now with the State to determine a fair value to begin our new game with.

- Disbursements to a member who is picked to select a card, or to anyone who picks a Queen or Joker will no longer be paid a percentage of the game holding. Instead, we will determine a fixed amount to award for each category.

We understand these changes may seem to be very significant. Unfortunately, we were caught unaware of the State changes to the charitable gaming rules and should have implemented them in 2010. At this point, our only way forward is to comply with the law and ensure our ability to continue this valuable gaming program for our Lodge. When we restart the Queen of Hearts our new House Rules will be published and available for member review.

While we are indeed a Family Center" we are NOT a Chucky Cheese
NO running
in the Social Quarters. All children must be kept under control and supervised.
We have been getting multiple complaints about children running in the lodge.
These complaints have been coming from not only long time members but families with children as well.
Please respect the folks around you and treat the lodge as you would a restaurant.
We love the kids but also need to look out for their safety and the safety of the staff. We would hate for a child to get hot food spilled on them if they bump a table or a waitress.
Please do not take this as "We don't want the kids at the lodge" We Do !!
We just ask that you keep them in control as you would at any other place that serves food and drink.
